"In the Chinese zodiac, year 2003 is the year of the goat. However, if a calendar exists for operating systems, 2003 very much looks like it could be the year of the penguin. In this year alone, Linux has gained more ground and popularity compared with where it was about a year ago. This, partly, could be attributed to the united and concerted support shown by major vendors in backing the open-source operating system.

"The reason for the increase in adoption of Linux is rather straightforward. Many of the major issues have been addressed. So, to many industry players who have a stake, Linux is finally coming of age.

"'Linux is by far the most important platform for Oracle's products today. All of our products run on Linux and we are very committed to it,' says V.R. Srivatsan, managing director of Oracle Corporation Malaysia. He also points out that some of the newer Oracle products were developed on the Linux platform..."
