"Witnessing the proliferation of Linux around the world, high-tech giant Oracle has been providing free support for the open-source operating system that runs its e-business software. And recently, North Rhine-Westphalia Police Force, ViewSonic and Yahoo took Oracle up on its offer.

"So far, at least one industry watcher is singing Oracle's praises. 'The bottom line is that Oracle is trying to establish itself as the Linux king,' says Mike Schiff, vice president of data warehousing and business intelligence at market researcher Current Analysis. 'It's a fairly good move for them because it's one of the platforms that arch rival Microsoft won't compete on... but the bad news is that IBM recognizes this as well...'"
