(BMI) has published an expanded edition of its Migrationsleitfadens
(Migration Guidelines). This paper, first published in 2003,
discusses the migration of software components on servers and
workstations to free and proprietary software, underscoring the
goal of the Ministry of the Interior to promote a variety of
software used by public officials. The migration guidelines, which
contain practical tips on migration in addition to technical
information, have been downloaded more than 100,000 times. Among
other things, this new edition is to contain new information about
various operating systems, interoperability between office suites,
and economic and legal aspects. It will also be sold in stores
