"I'm about to jump on the bandwagon of bashers who took a look
at the Microsoft-sponsored report "What Price Cool?" You can read
it for yourself if you're looking for a good laugh. And if you want
a great tear-down of the details, read the Register story "What
Price Nonsense?" I'm more interested in the fact that Microsoft is
wasting resources on this sort of report. What audience is it aimed
at? What is the point?
"Let me summarize for you if you cannot stand reading such
creations: There are two major platforms: Apple Macintosh and
Microsoft Windows. The Apple Macintosh generally costs more than a
PC. End of report. This is not particularly earth-shattering news.
Linux is never mentioned, of course, and some might argue that this
report is a smokescreen to keep people from looking at the third
alternative. And since this report emphasizes both short- and
long-term costs and expenses, Linux is actually the elephant (or
the jaunty jackalope) in the room."
