"The key promise behind Oracle's acquisition of Sun Microsystems was to develop an integrated hardware and software stack. It's a promise that Oracle is aiming to deliver on this week at its OpenWorld 2010 conference with a series of integrated hardware and software releases.

"Oracle (NASDAQ: ORCL) is announcing a new Linux operating system kernel, a preview of its Solaris 11 Unix operating system, new SPARC processors and new hardware systems. Among the key new systems the database giant unveiled is the Exalogic Elastic Cloud solution, intended to deliver a cloud-in-a-box.

"The reason we're doing this is to create brutal efficiency. This about how cost effective you can maintain your infrastructure, how high you can get the performance, about the superior availability and security."
