LinuxPR: Open Source Broadcaster Calls for Disney Boycott

Oct 03, 2001, 00:23 (16 Talkback[s])
"Today from their studios in Aurora Illinois, well known GNU/Linux and Open Source Community broadcaster, GeekCast Network, called for a boycott of the Disney Corporation in reaction to Disney's participation in drafting the SSSCA legislation. GeekCast is the home of the Linux communities leading linux focused broadcast, The Linux Show!!

Jeff Gerhardt co-host of The Linux Show stated the position of the organization, "In the past, here at The Linux Show we have been very bothered by the apparent lack of political acumen by members of our own community. We often talked a good fight, but when push comes to shove, it seems we were more willing to complain than stand our ground and fight for a political principle. During the last month our country experienced a great tragedy. One of the outcomes of that tragedy appears to be an overall maturing of the nation (and our community), and a desire to express political will."

'Therefore,' continued Gerhardt, "noting this political will, and sensing the potential of unfortunate political changes to occur while the nation grieves, we are sounding a clarion call for the GNU/Linux and Open Source communities to stand and be counted. Voice your opinions to an issue that will impact ALL OF US in the Open Source community. We are calling for a Boycott of the Disney Company as an act of protest for Disney's participation in the creation of the Security Systems Standards and Certification Act" (SSSCA) legislation. This legislation will MANDATE All software and digital devices to include federally-mandated copy-prevention systems. SSSCA is just one of a number of over reaching bills that are being put forward as a reaction to the recent tragedy. We all understand the need for security, but lets not throw away our freedoms in the process."
