Ubuntu has a new "snappy" super-small Core, suited to the cloud, and competing with CoreOs and Red Hat Atomic. Launched in alpha today, it will be a full release in 2015, and move to Long Term Support (LTS) in 2016. Mark Shuttleworth says this is the biggest shakeup in Ubuntu in 20 years, and came about when the company realised that its work on Ubuntu Mobile exactly solved the problems raised by the cloud and containers.
