BT – What’s your opinion about Microsoft’s ‘shared
source’ initiative?

RMS – If you compare Microsoft’s practices
with the definition of free software, you’ll see that they have
very little in common. There is nothing new about distributing
proprietary source code under a nondisclosure agreement to certain
select clients. That’s how AT&T distributed Unix in the 1980s.
My response to that was to launch the development of a free
replacement for Unix, the GNU system…”
