In an agreement struck October 28 between AFUL (the French association of Linux users) and the French Ministry of Education, AFUL will assist with installing Linux and Free Software networks in high schools, junior high schools and primary schools throughout France.

Read the French text of the agreement.

Here is the report posted by Cyril Bortolato to the Silicon Valley Linux Users mailing list.

The AFUL (French Association of Linux and free software Users)
reached an agreement with the French Ministry of Education on
October 28th.

Look at paragraph 3. Here's a translation:

                        ARTICLE 3. Setting up networks

On the basis of projects, the AFUL will give its support for setting
up networks in high schools, junior high schools and primary schools
while contributing to the implementation of Internet / Intranet
technologies
available or to develop using free platforms and free software.

                          3.1 - projects

The AFUL engages on these bases:

- to proceed, directly or via its members, with the development of
turn-key LAN solutions for junior high and high schools containing
machines servers running under the Linux operating system. The possible
deployment of the application is the responsibility of the academy
and its partners, the role of the AFUL and its members limiting itself
to supply software and assistance with the installation of the network.

- to install multi-boot workstations, with for example the Linux
system and a commercial operating system, for the teaching projects
which would like to exploit such a provision.

- to propose, on an experimental basis, to the schools or groups of
voluntary primary schools, the installations similar to those implemented
in the high and junior high schools.

- to ensure a technical aid for the implementation of the projects,
according to the methods described in article 3.2

-- end translation

Article 3.2 has to do with AFUL creating on-line documentations,
and remote installation of software over the Net.

This agreement will last 2 years and will be reconducted automatically.

I think this is a big win over MS! MS is lobbying in french education
to have Windoze installed in every schools..
