Industry Leading Software Development Tools Increase Speed of Popular Linux Platform.

LINUXEXPO, Raleigh, N.C., May 18, 1999 -- Cygnus Solutions, the leader in open-source software, today announced that it is working with Alpha Processor, Inc. to optimize Cygnus' industry leading GNUPro® Toolkit for Alpha Linux. This collaboration allows Linux software platform providers and application developers to take advantage of the Alpha platform and includes support for Alpha-based multi-processor systems. Using this software development technology, Linux platform vendors and Linux applications developers will have access to optimized compilation, debugging, and run-time components, allowing them to maximize software performance on Alpha hardware.

Cygnus GNUPro Toolkit is a complete software development toolsuite that enables Linux developers to maximize the performance of the Linux operating system (OS) as well as commercial applications running on the Linux OS. As part of this engineering agreement, Cygnus will optimize the GNUPro compilation technology to maximize executable performance while reducing code size and memory footprint. The combination of the Alpha platform, Linux, and Cygnus GNUPro software development tools will play a key role in ushering in a new era of high performance Linux computing, particularly for Internet service based applications.

"Working with market leaders such as Cygnus to provide high-performance Alpha solutions at attractive price points, Alpha Processor, Inc. is reinforcing its open-source business model and commitment to the Linux environment," said Jeff Borkowski, vice president of marketing and business development for Alpha Processor, Inc. "Cygnus' engineering track record and role in open-source software development ensures fundamental software tools keep pace with microprocessor innovation and are available to a broader market."

"Alpha Processor's commitment to open-standard platform solutions complements Cygnus' leadership role in open-source software," said Scott Petry, vice president of marketing at Cygnus Solutions. "We are pleased to optimize our GNUPro software tools, considered standard by leading Linux vendors and developers, for Alpha Linux."

Industry Leading Software Tools for Linux
Cygnus GNUPro features the industry leading* GNU compiler - the toolchain used to build Linux and the GNU debugger - that is backed by ten years of Cygnus expertise in porting (and maintaining) the GNU technology to more than 125 host/target combinations.

Cygnus GNUPro Toolkit for Linux is a complete software development toolkit that includes ANSI-conforming C compiler, ANSI-tracking C++ compiler, the Cygnus InsightÔ visual debugger, a macro-assembler, linker/loader, binary utilities, libraries, printed and online documentation. Each release of GNUPro undergoes hundreds of thousands of tests to ensure that software developers have tools that work out-of-the-box with high reliability.

Leader in Open-Source Software
As a leader in open-source software**, Cygnus engineers have contributed the majority of all new innovations in GNU and drive GNU development tools technology forward by incorporating leading-edge features and optimizations. Cygnus works with platform vendors to ensure the latest GNU technologies are available on their platforms, as well as end users to customize and optimize GNUPro tools, the commercial version of the GNU tools, for specific applications. Cygnus offers unparalleled quality, functionality, and support of GNUPro tools in a commercial software development environment for Linux, Solaris, HP-UX, and over 100 other platform configurations, including the next-generation PlayStation from Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.

Availability
GNUPro Toolkit for Linux is available immediately. The optimizations for API Alpha processors will be available from Cygnus in the third quarter of 1999. Cygnus GNUPro Toolkit for Linux is priced at $79 and is available for Red Hat Linux 4.2, 5.1 and 5.2 on x86 platforms by ordering online at http://www.cygnus.com/gnupro or through an official Cygnus reseller. Details are listed at www.cygnus.com/partner.

In addition to the toolkit, Cygnus also offers an innovative GNUPro subscription service that includes regular software upgrades, featuring the latest innovations in GNU technology, as well as developer support services for rapid response and resolution of technical questions or problems.
