"First, a proviso. Neither Windows 2000 (W2K) nor Linux makes
any bones about it: they are not (yet) aiming for the
consumer market. We're talking cutting edge here, and both
operating systems currently demand some degree of computer
savvy. In particular, if you like the games you play on your
Windows 95 or 98 machine, don't even think about upgrading.
Few modern games will run on either of the new systems...."
"Because manufacturers depend on Windows compatibility for
their sales, you'll find that the latest hardware has an
excellent chance of running under W2K. Linux usually takes a
while to catch up, but because Linux users are more thrifty,
older add-ons will be supported even when Microsoft is happy
to disregard them as hopelessly old fashioned. W2K turned its
nose up at my ancient sound card: Linux greeted it like an old
friend."
