"When Jef Raskin talks about computers, it pays to listen. Raskin has spent his career thinking about how to make computing easier. His latest book, "The Humane Interface," is a rich study of ways to improve the user experience.

"Raskin, one of the architects of the original Macintosh, thinks we need new approaches to our old ideas of graphical environments. Both Mac and Windows demand more resources from the computer than they should, while their pull-down menus and scrollbars are cumbersome and slow. And is dividing our time between mouse and keyboard a good idea--or just an incentive to sloppy programming?

"Raskin addresses issues such as these in a new open-source project called T.H.E., which stands for The Humane Environment. Available in prototype, or 'alpha' form, at an open-source repository called SourceForge (humane.sourceforge.net/home/ index.html), THE seems at first glance to be a text editor. But Raskin, who likes new terms, calls it a 'nucleus' to which you can add commands..."
