"A new survey from Evans Data Corp appears to contradict suggestions from Microsoft Corp that the growth of the Linux operating system has been at the expense of Unix, rather than its own Windows operating system.

"The Santa Cruz, California-based research house interviewed more than 400 developers using Linux during February this year to ascertain trends in the Linux development market, and discovered that 52.2% of developers targeting Linux for application development had previously targeted their development at the various flavors of Windows.

"While Linux has undoubtedly been gaining ground on both Windows and Unix as an enterprise operating system, the fact that it is more freely available for download and installation on multiple machines than its rivals means it is difficult to accurately pinpoint uptake trends..."
