"Using HP servers running the Red Hat Linux operating system, Chicago's new system will issue more than one million vehicle stickers annually, replacing an aging mainframe application. The move may be the first of many instances where open-source solutions replace the city's expensive to- maintain proprietary systems.

"Chicago CIO Chris O'Brien said the city is exploring open-source solutions to squeeze cost from its IT infrastructure. 'The amount of money we have to do projects is not increasing at all, so the more money we spend on things like operating systems and database platforms, the less we have for other types of applications,' O'Brien said..."
