Desktop Environments

"The Equinox Desktop Environment, EDE
This is one of my personal favorites, it utilizes primarily the FLTK set as opposed to GTK or QT, and has a very light resource usage footprint. In look and feel it resembles primarily Windows 98 or 95 but with some features the Win9X series of operating systems' desktops would have been far better had they had (like search from the taskbar and multiple virtual desktops). Equinox follows the UNIX philosophy where each part of the DE is split into its own small executable that does only one thing and does that one thing well.

"The Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment, LXDE
This is one of my least favorite, but has come a long way in a very short period of time. LXDE is somewhat generic, and like EDE has pieces that can be used independently of one another."
