"After I review an operating system or Linux distribution, it’s always fun to go back and try out the product again, with all updates, and see how it’s improved. Ubuntu 10.04 was something I thought was pretty decent, but not decent enough to steal me away from Arch. However, I know others that are Ubuntu users and my wife is a big fan as well, so I still continued to have exposure to it even after having reviewed it. Here are my thoughts on Ubuntu 10.04 and how it stands today.
"First of all, I noticed a few really odd bugs after my wife had been using it for a while. One problem that really irks me is the Plymouth splash screen. While it does look nice, most of the time I never see it. While I had luck on my test machine during my initial review, I don’t think a single one of my other machines actually show a splash screen while the computer boots up. Instead, all I see is a blinking cursor. I’ve even went as far as to bring an Ubuntu disc to work and try it out on work computers, and nothing. The boot basically consists of a blinking cursor and then a log in screen.
"I guess what irks me the most is that since this is an LTS release, bugs like this are not acceptable. For Ubuntu 10.04 to have a strong corporate presence, first impressions are everything."
