PC Week: IBM introduces Linux laptop

“IBM officials said today that the ThinkPad 600 has become the
first laptop computer certified to run Red Hat Linux.”

“Laptops have been a barrier to Linux use because their
specialized components require specific drivers and adjustments to
work with the open source code operating system. Linux
advocates said IBM’s move will be another boost for the OS,
allowing users to maintain compatible desktop and laptop
systems.

“The move also keeps IBM one step ahead of Dell Computer Corp.,
which announced in August that it plans to put Linux on its
Inspiron line of laptops by the end of the year.”
