“Just how revolutionary is Linux, the increasingly popular open
source operating system? Its impact on the information technology
industry can be gleaned from the once-unthinkable partnership
between the free software or open source movement and the big
vendors that used to cling to their proprietary ways.”

“In fact, every major vendor worth its salt is rushing to
embrace Linux. Significantly, it will be one of the OSes that
the next-generation 64-bit IA-64 architecture would natively
support-another indication of the important role that Linux would
play in the future of computing.

“Still, partnering with the open source community can be tricky
for companies like Hewlett-Packard Co., which is codeveloping IA-64
with Intel Corp. Like other vendors, pragmatism is still the
bottomline for HP when it comes to supporting Linux.”
