Favorite Talkbacks, 8-18-2008

One of my favorite features of Linux Today is the Talkbacks. A lot of times they’re better than the articles. Or at least funny, or intriguing, or from such a different perspective they change how I think about the subject.

I can’t share all of the Talkbacks that I think are worth sharing because there are too many good ones. So here is a random sampling of a few that caught my eye. I’m not saying I agree with any of them- I just think they’re worth sharing.

P.Woods – Subject: Not so mini ( Aug 15, 2008, 21:03:15 )

“A PBX or “Private Branch Exchange” is like a miniature phone company/switch in your own office/house.”

The PBXs I worked on for 30 years could hardly be described as “miniature”. To be fair, they became smaller as the years passed, but there must still be some big brutes out there. A PBX based on a PC would be a “miniature”.

Peg Gallo – Subject: Re: Stupid techno-dweebs….. ( Aug 17, 2008, 20:49:06 )

“Bryan – I feel your fear and depression. Don’t despair,

Boyce and Boice are the Electronic Malfunction Demons

that are causing chaos in the machine. Bind them and

toss them out. Follow the link for details:

http://www.demonbuster.com/boyce.html”

Nicholas Holowaty – Subject: McBride Thinks ( Aug 18, 2008, 16:04:41 )

“Isn’t that an oxymoron.”

Rainer Weikusat – Subject: Misguided. ( Aug 17, 2008, 09:17:28 )

“This should have been ‘computer have the

bad reputation that one would need to learn

typing to use them’. And that is – of course –

nonsense. It all depends on the tasks one

wants to accomplish and using a PC as really

expensive audio-player, quirky TV and to

subscribe to n different ‘publish holiday photos

nobody cares about’ ‘homepages for dummies’ services

does not require more typing skills than using

an ATM (which is already too complicated for lots

of people, but that’s a different story). “

GreyGeek – Subject: Here’s another “Reality Check”… ( Aug 14, 2008, 22:27:07 )

“What is missing from the news? Reports that huge numbers of credit card numbers or SSNs have been stolen from compromised computers running Linux. That’s the reality check that Windows centric media outlets patently ignore. It is also the reality check that many IT staff and tech support people ignore because the Windows mantra is all they know. Apparently they don’t understand that zombie farms of 50,000 Linux PCs cannot be created using a single email virus, which is the way those farms are created by infecting Windows boxes.”
