32BitsOnline: Review: Canvas 7 (beta) for Linux

“I looked forward to doing this review of Deneba Canvas 7 for
Linux as another indicator that Linux is being welcomed into the
mainstream by companies that two years ago didn’t know, or admit,
that Linux existed. The other thing that I wanted to see was
another use for the WINE libs out here in the real world – Deneba
being the most recent to see the genius behind the cross platform
possibilities inherent in the development of WINE.”

Canvas7 for Linux is Beta software right now and it has a
few problems at this date that prevent it’s use in anything close
to a production environment, but shows enough promise to be
debugged and – perhaps – sold to the Linux community as a pretty
good example of what the traditional Windows and Mac software
companies can do in a landscape that increasingly includes the
Linuxes and the BSD’s on the desktop.

“I say perhaps sold because as you register before downloading
the program, one of the questions asked is whether you would prefer
banner advertising or the outright purchase to compensate Deneba
for their work when Canvas goes on sale. The banner ads are pretty
painless; they are displayed at the top of the user’s guide,
available only online. The other option, outright payment for the
software, would probably be along the lines of what Deneba charges
other platforms, around $80.00 US for the “standard” version and
$275-$375 for the “professional.”
