The Netcraft Web Server Survey is a survey of Web Server
software usage on Internet connected computers that collects and
collates as many hostnames providing an http service as can be
located, and systematically polls each one with an HTTP request for
the server name.

In the January 1999 survey, Netcraft received responses from
4,062,280 sites and shows Apache runs 54% of Internet Web
servers.

The runner up Microsoft IIs Web server holds 23% of the
market.
