Are there enough users for Linux Mint Debian Edition to survive?

As I was browsing the comments in the announcement, I noticed a disturbing post by Clement Lefebvre that surprised me…

I admire the Linux Mint developers for doing LMDE, but Clem’s comment does make me wonder if a day will come when it has to be cut in favor of the Ubuntu versions. It’s a bit disheartening to read that the Linux Mint developers can’t put any more resources into it until its popularity increases. I wonder if it’s the chicken and egg thing again: Should they put more resources into it to try to increase its popularity, or should they wait until it’s more popular before giving it more resources? I really don’t know.
