language technologies are providing a more natural interface for
computing and communicating at the start of a new millennium.
L&H demonstrated how software that can recognize, understand
and translate human speech and language is moving beyond the
desktop to new platforms and products like handheld devices,
information appliances, enterprise networks and Web-based services.
For example, L&H unveiled plans to launch L&H
iTranslator(TM) Online, a new Web-based, e-commerce translation
service, and announced that it will support the widely popular
Linux operating system through software development kits, enabling
Linux developers to incorporate L&H speech and language
offerings in applications for handheld devices. The
demonstrations and announcements took place here at the Comdex Fall
1999 tradeshow in Booth #L5726 in the South Hall of the Las Vegas
Convention Center from November 15-19, 1999….”

developers that want to incorporate its speech and language
technologies into their applications. Linux has quickly become a
popular operating system for handheld device manufacturers because
of its ability to run on both X86 and StrongArm processors, as well
as its quick development time and robust operation. L&H’s
text-to-speech (TTS 3000) and automatic speech recognition (ASR)
engines currently support Linux. This support will be extended to
the L&H Voice Xpress Software Development Kit (SDK), which
provides low level applications programming interfaces (APIs) and
libraries to support desktop and handheld device applications.”
