“Comprehensive Survey of Over 2,200 Decision Makers in
Private Industry, Education, and Government Demolishes Linux
‘Windows-killer’ Myth

Survey.com, the leading eResearch services company, announces
that results of the first survey in the Open-Source UNIX Research
Initiative reveal no serious threat to Microsoft’s dominance of
enterprise computing, both on servers and desktop, through
2001.

Although open-source UNIX (OSU), especially Linux, will make
astonishing gains over the next two years — between 100% and 700%
gain in server share on eight major enterprise server applications,
Microsoft Windows NT/2000 will maintain between a 30% and 65%
server share on these same applications. This compares to a server
share of around 10% or less for OSU on most of these applications.
The study also shows that open-source UNIX will have the most
impact among smaller companies, while Microsoft’s server share
continues to grow among the largest enterprises. (View
corresponding graph on our website at
http://www.survey.com/datapoint_2000-02-14.html.)”

“The Open-Source UNIX Research Initiative is a joint effort of
Survey.com and Enterprise Linux Magazine, designed to deliver solid
primary market research about the adoption of OSU.”
