the Linux kernel.

“Now that Linux 2.4 has been out for a while, the key
kernel developers and some key users (like Oracle and others) have
had the chance to sit back, look at what’s been accomplished, and
consider what work should be done next. In this month’s column, we
will see which technologies might one day just make it into the
next version of Linux, version 2.5. Remember, odd numbers are
development kernels, while even numbers are released versions. So,
2.5 is going to be the development base for the Linux Next
Generation, or version 2.6.”
