In May this year, we reported on Microsoft’s upcoming plans to bring its SQL Server to the Linux platform, providing developers and organizations with freedom of choice for both cloud and local infrastructures when it comes to implementing a powerful database server.

And now, it looks like Canonical prepared a public preview of SQL Server on Linux, allowing Ubuntu users to get familiar with it. We all known that companies dedicated to open source software won’t replace the free and powerful MariaDB or MySQL solutions with SQL Server, but it looks like Microsoft’s relational database management system promises support for Docker containers and enables choice of data types and development languages. Using Microsoft SQL Server saves costs, adds an extra layer of performance, and improves scalability.
