“With the backing of technology heavyweights, San
Francisco-based Linuxcare on Tuesday announced it will receive
$32.5 million in venture funding — the largest single-round amount
for a Linux company to date.”

It will be the second round of venture-backed funding for
the 120-employee company, and possibly the last before the company
tries a public stock offering
, says Fernand Sarrat,
Linuxcare’s chief executive. The company’s main backer this round
is Patricof & Co. Ventures, with additional funding from Apax
Partners Europe, the company announced.”

“According to Linuxcare executives, the two venture backers are
putting down “slightly more than a third” of the round’s total
amount.”
