“Linux distributions are like rock ‘n’ roll bands: Everyone has
a favorite one, with reasons that are more emotional than anything
else. All the Linux distributions are built on the GNU codebase,
which means they have a great deal in common. Some of the
differences have nothing to do with the program itself (such as the
presence or absence of manuals and technical support)….”

Linux is fragmenting, which makes some of its fiercest
adherents pledge allegiance to Debian, which is among the most
“open” of the Linux distributions.
There’s a battle for the
graphical interface (GNOME vs. KDE) and other elements. At some
point, Linus Torvalds and his Merry Programmers will need to decide
what goes in the primary distribution and what doesn’t….”
