“This paper will concentrate on comparing Zope against MS
Site Server in the role of an “Intranet” server platform, and will
compare and contrast the methodologies of MS Site Server vs. Zope
application development.”
“The bottom line is this: if you want to make money developing
stuff with Site Server, be prepared to do one of the following: a)
study hard; relinquish most knowledge of things you’ve learned
previously as you’ll, for the most part, be “locked-in” to the MS
way of doing things; become an ASP/VBScript/JScript master, — or
— b) accept your fate and become a “development clerical worker”
who cuts and pastes bits of pre-MS-written template code to make
functional sites. If you want to make money developing stuff with
Zope, study hard, use your head, and be creative without those
constraints as you can generally make it do whatever you want it to
do (it’s open source). If you just want something that resembles an
Intranet server out of the box for your own company, use Back
Office (and thereby use Site Server). If you want control, power,
and openness, use Zope.”
