here Tuesday evening to discuss why open source has been so
successful recently — and why Mozilla never caught on to the
rising tide.”

“Last week, coinciding with the one-year anniversary of
Netscape’s Mozilla effort , a key figure associated with the open
source program stepped down, leaving some to ponder Mozilla’s
future.”

“Linux started small, said Michael Tiemann, co-founder of the
10-year-old open source software company Cygnus Solutions. It
essentially began in 1987 with the release of the GNU C compiler, a
mere 110,000 lines of code that became the basis for the work Linux
creator Linus Torvalds and others did later on. Tiemann said he was
able to port the compiler to a new platform within two weeks of
getting his hands on it.”
