CNET Gamecenter: LithTech Goes Linux

“Kirkland, Washington-based game developer Monolith Productions
has made no secret in recent months that its products aren’t just
for Windows-based PCs anymore. In fact, Monolith is looking to team
up with the Linux penguin.”

“Last April, Monolith inked a deal with Belgian-German software
house Hyperion Software to port Monolith’s animé-based
first-person shooter Shogo: Mobile Armor Division and the game’s
LithTech 3D engine to the Amiga and Apple Macintosh platforms. This
week, Monolith and Hyperion announced that they have extended that
deal to include the Linux operating system for x86 and Power PC
processors as well.”

Though a Linux-based Shogo is certainly interesting, the
fact that Hyperion is porting over Monolith’s 3D engine is arguably
even more so.
According to Monolith’s Web site, the LithTech
engine was, at one time, developed “by Monolith under the
supervision of Microsoft.” According to Monolith CEO Jason Hall,
Monolith is no longer officially associated with Microsoft, and the
former alliance does not pose any potential problems now that
LithTech is expanding to another operating system.”
