CNET News.com: Judge calls Microsoft a “monopoly”

A federal judge has determined that Microsoft holds a
monopoly in computer operating systems, criticizing the company in
an unusually decisive statement that could signal the outcome of
the landmark antitrust case.

“The 200-page-plus ruling, called a “finding of fact,” was not a
verdict. But the widely anticipated statement appeared to indicate
that U.S. District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson is leaning heavily
in favor of the Justice Department (DOJ) prosecutors arguing
against the software giant.”

“Microsoft enjoys so much power in the market for
Intel-compatible PC operating systems that if it wished to exercise
this power solely in terms of price, it could charge a price for
Windows substantially above that which could be charged in a
competitive market,” Jackson wrote.”
