“Sometimes, the adage “less is more” applies, but rarely so with
Linux distributions. In the world of Linux, distribution vendors
attempt to add value to their products with custom configuration
and installation tools and by including every available Linux
software package they can get their hands on. These tactics
generally result in multi-CD distributions composed of several
gigabytes of data–not the best solution for users who want to
download a distribution over a 56k modem. If you travel frequently,
a distribution that can reasonably be downloaded via a dial-up
connection could be a blessing if disaster strikes your Linux
system.”
“We tested two compact distributions–Peanut Linux and
Vector Linux–to see how these slimmed-down contenders measure up
to the big boys in terms of installation, configuration, and
functionality. Our test system was a Pentium-200 with a 3GB
hard disk, 64MB of RAM, and a 3Com NIC.”
