Computer Currents: Japan PC Makers Hop On Linux

“For Japanese users and supporters of the Linux operating
system, it’s been a good week. A string of announcements from major
hardware makers has pushed Linux towards the big time, and
headlines, in Japan.”

“Among the announcements in the last week, Fujitsu Ltd.
[TOKYO:6702] said it will begin selling servers based on Linux, IBM
Japan and and NEC Corp. [TOKYO:6701] announced plans to begin
offering Linux support services, and software vendors Trend Micro
and JustSystem said they will enter the market.”

“IBM Japan announced it will begin supporting RedHat and Turbo
Linux distributions following the lead of its US parent. In
addition to working on running Linux on its Netfinity PC servers,
IntelliStation workstation, Thinkpad notebook PC, the company is
also working on a release of its DB2 Universal Database for
Linux.”
