Computer Currents/Newsbytes: IBM Joins “Trillionaires”

“IBM… will join a powerful new industry group that plans to
build a version of the Linux operating system that runs on Intel
Corporation’s microchip design.

“The group, called Trillion, also includes industry heavyweights
like Hewlett-Packard, SGI, and Linux Systems, Inc.”

“The consortium will work with Intel to boost its chip
design from current speeds of 32 bits to 64 bits.
Intel’s new
architecture will first appear in a microprocessor now code-named
Merced, which is expected sometime in the middle of next year.”
