“A joke circulating around technology investment circles these
days suggests that companies with lagging stock prices should slap
“Linux” on their company names. However, that’s not what Michael
Cowpland, founder and CEO of Corel (Nasdaq: CORL), has done.
Instead, he’s maintained a successful strategy of returning his
company to profitability and entered the emerging market of Linux
with a low budget, high quality approach. His Microsoft products
continue to gain market share while he’s helping to create a future
for his fifteen year old company.”

“As the high-technology equivalent of a smart General, he has
lead a corporate turn-around by locating the opinion leaders in the
Global technology community. Then he waited patiently while Linux
went from the innovator stage of the adoption cycle into the early
majority. Poised for a first quarter release, he’s demonstrated his
seasoning by keeping his eye on the wave and having his surfboard
ready. His champions might want to tip their red hats to him for
courage and tenacity in the face of criticism from every
corner.”

R. Scott Renovich, a cub reporter for Red Herring looking
for page views, wrote a scathing article when Cowpland described
Corel’s new push into the Linux arena. Mr. Renovich seems to think
that Debian is a “so-called” distribution of Linux. He might serve
himself and his readers by doing his home work. Debian is a Linux
distribution.
