CRN: Corel Aims To Cash In On Demand For Client-Side Linux

“As expected, Corel Corp. Monday said it is shipping its Linux
operating system entry and promised a version of Corel WordPerfect
Office for Linux next spring.”

“Corel Linux OS, based on the Debian distribution of Linux, is
now available as a free download, and Corel, Ottawa, also will
offer CDs on its Web site for about $5. Estimated retail price for
the standard edition will be about $49. A Deluxe version including
BRU Backup software, Corel WordPerfect 8 clipart and a game will be
about $79. That edition contains some proprietary applications that
cannot be copied or redistributed.”

Next spring, the company plans to ship WordPerfect Office
for Linux, to be followed by a Linux version of CorelDraw by year’s
end
, executives said. The company previewed these
applications, showing their ability to import and export PDF files.
Pricing has not been announced but will be comparable to that of
the Windows versions of the product. Corel WordPerfect Office for
Windows typically sells for $99 to $149….”
