“While it is optimistic about Windows 2000, IBM also supports
Linux. IBM’s DB2 and Websphere server for Linux are in beta and
slated to be available next month, and Lotus Notes/Domino and
SecureWay will support Linux by year’s end, said company
executives. IBM’s Professional Support Services also will address
core operating-system-level problems for both Linux and Windows
2000.”

“‘People select platforms and operating systems based on what is
best suited for their applications,’ said Sullivan. ‘Linux’s
strength is in file and print sharing and Web serving tied to
Apache HTTP servers. That’s a growing market of new
implementations. We are hoping customers will implement Linux with
our middleware then scale up to S/390,’ he said.”
