“The US government and 19 states will reportedly file
charges against Microsoft Corp… under two sections of federal
antitrust law, establishing legal strategy in the final phase of
the precedent-setting antitrust case.”
“According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, the US
Justice Department and the individual states are expected to
jointly seek a judgement against Microsoft outlining two violations
of Section 2 of the Sherman Act, for illegally protecting and
extending the Windows software monopoly, and a third violation for
illegal business practices. A separate filing by the 19 states is
expected to seek further charges under state laws.”
The report stated that separate settlement talks are expected to
intensify. A court-appointed mediator, Judge Richard Posner of the
US Court of Appeals in Chicago, has set an aggressive schedule of
three rounds of talks over the next two weeks.
