It seems as though the cuddly penguin–the mascot for the
Linux operating system–is forever forging into new territory.

This became abundantly clear to me when I noticed even IBM starting
to plug its “big iron” System 390 mainframe computer as the ideal
Linux server.”

“So when I learned about Linux being groomed for the toughest
platform of all mobile computing–it all seemed rather logical.
After all, Linux is both powerful and compact, fitting all the
features of a fully modern operating system into a package that can
even run on vintage DOS computers. Moving it to the mobile arena
makes perfect sense to me.”

“And why not? Just a quick glance at the official Linux home
page (www.linux.org) is enough to see the grassroots enthusiasm for
Linux in the worldwide developer community. Here you will find
efforts under way to port (modify) Linux to run on almost three
dozen platforms, ranging from the mostly obsolete x86 processors to
the even more obsolete NeXT “cube.”
