“Whether or not you like or agree with Linux, GNU, or even the
open source movement, you have to give some credit to Debian. They
have made outstanding advances with almost a completely volunteer
base of hackers. Started in 1993 by Deb and Ian Murdock (thus we
get DebIan), it’s made many steps forward, but has still had its
shares of ups and downs just like the rest in the Linux
community.”
“Now that Debian has finally hit a stride and released one
marvelous release after another, we’re starting to see the same
kind of tactics distributions like Kondara, Mandrake, and Gentus
are using against Red Hat. That’s right, Storm is setting out to
make Debian better! In fact, in many ways Storm has improved
Debian, but has also commercialized it simultaneously, which is one
thing Debian is not particularly known for with it’s strict set of
standards on its programs and actually giving away a load of copies
of Debian 2.2 at LinuxWorld.”
“Is it worth breaking your open source convictions, or is it
worth spending those few extra dollars to get the likes of VMWare,
X-Win32, StarOffice, and more? Let’s take a look.”
