EE TIMES: Plans to pump up packet switching coalesce at N+I

Semiconductor developers and OEMs turned to informal alliances
at Networld+Interop here last week to simplify or extend packet
switching in a bid to push forward maturing data-communications
architectures for business networks.

IBM Corp., Microsoft Corp., Compaq Computer Corp, Silicon
Graphics Inc. and Xlnt Designs Inc. were among the Alteon partners
on hand at the conference to stump for Jumbo Frames.

Jes Sorenson, a product-line manager for high-performance
networking at Europe’s CERN physics lab, helped Alteon write a
Linux driver for Jumbo Frames.

Jumbo Frames improves CPU utilization and allows transfers of 90
Mbytes/second using a standard Pentium over a 33-MHz PCI bus.
