Eight-core PowerPC SoC begins sampling

“Aimed at high-end networking applications, the 1.5GHz QorIQ
P4080 offers a private backside cache per core, tri-level cache
hierarchy, datapath acceleration, a Virtutech-based hypervisor, and
a CoreNet “coherency fabric” inter-core interconnect, says the
company.

“Freescale announced the QorIQ line, including the P4080, in
June 2008. The pin- and software-compatible successors to
Freescale’s PowerQUICC line of network processors are fabricated
with 45nm process technology, and range from one to eight PowerPC
e500 cores. The single-core P101 runs at 400MHz on only four Watts
while the eight-core P4080 runs at 1.5GHz on a relatively modest 30
Watts.

“Often referred to simply as the P4, the P4080 appears to be the
first QorIQ to reach sampling stage. Providing concurrent handling
of control-plane, data-plane, and application layer processing
tasks, the P4080 is designed for switches, enterprise and service
provider routers, access and media gateways, base station
controllers, radio network controllers (RNCs), and general-purpose
embedded systems, says Freescale.”
