“Although the announcement of Oracle 9i got a lot more
publicity, it looks like IBM will get to market first with DB2 7.1
Enterprise-Extended Edition (EEE) for Linux. EEE promises Linux an
enterprise database platform that, like Oracle 9i, will “catapult
Linux into the enterprise.”
“Just a few weeks ago, with much fanfare at Oracle OpenWorld
2000, Oracle announced its plans for Oracle 9i on Linux: by
mid-2001, Real Application Clusters that will support business
applications scaling way beyond what the 2.4 kernel will
support.”
“With surprisingly little fanfare, IBM in July posted a beta of
its DB2 Enterprise-Extended Edition (EEE) for Linux, which offers
high end clustering for business applications that sounds a lot
like the Oracle 9i offering. But if beta testing stays on track,
EEE for Linux will be final in January, about six months ahead of
Oracle 9i Real Application Clusters.”
“How do the high end Linux database offerings from Oracle and
IBM compare? That is the main question that I posed to Jeff Jones,
the senior program manager for IBM data management solutions, in a
phone interview on Tuesday.”
