Enterprise Linux Today: Linuxcare and Netaid

“Late last year, Linuxcare, Inc. played an important role in
assisting the NetAid Development Team with building, testing, and
launching the Linux-based NetAid Web site. NetAid, a project backed
by Cisco, the United Nations Development Program, KPMG, and others,
utilizes the global reach of the Internet to increase awareness of
the world wide problem of extreme poverty.”

“Last year NetAid launched three overlapping concerts in London,
New York and Geneva–featuring artists such as Sheryl Crow, Jewel,
and others–with Webcasts of the concerts on www.netaid.org.
NetAid’s streaming capability was ten times greater than any
prior Webcast, with 125,000 simultaneous live streams,
accommodating a viewing capacity of more than ten million people
over the course of the ten-hour concert.

“To function, the Webcast required an operating system capable
of serving up heavy loads of streaming audio as well as concert
registration and other information. Real Networks provided audio
streaming capabilities using Linux servers. KPMG chose Linux
because it is open-sourced, scalable, and has proven web-serving
and hosting capabilities. KPMG turned to Linuxcare to obtain Secure
Socket Layer (SSL) hardware encryption testing expertise.”
