ExtremeTech: SuSE Disappoints Gnome Users

“Earlier today I got a copy of SuSE 8.1 via FedEx. I hadn’t
ordered anything and I didn’t know it was coming so I was surprised
to get the FedEx. I’d waited so long to get the new distro, I felt
like a kid at Christmas. Alas, all that anticipation has turned to
ashes in my mouth.

“I’m disappointed. Very disappointed. SuSE has let me (and all
other Gnome users) down.. I installed it on my test machine–and
the installation should have been the first clue. Gnome is not even
installed by default. You have to change the software setting in
the install routine to get it to install. That’s ridiculous! Since
when did Gnome become the second-class desktop in Linux?

“Once I had SuSE installed, I booted into Gnome and was, again,
very disappointed. The Gnome desktop was bare bones, to say the
least. It seemed like an afterthought. Icons for the usual Gnome
applications–including Evolution and Galeon –were missing. The
Gnome menus were very anemic, particularly when compared to the
robust KDE menus. And to add insult to injury, those KDE menus were
fully accessible from Gnome. Even worse, all those KDE apps had
icons build into the menus as well…”
