“more than 40 open source developers gathered in Melbourne
for the Australian Unix Users’ Group’s (AUUG’s) inaugural Open
Source Symposium.”
“Hosted by AUUG, along with the Internet Society of Australia
(ISOC-AU), Linux Users of Victoria, Systems Administrators’ User
Group and Unix vendor Santa Cruz Operation (SCO), the event
featured presentations from several open-source developers.”
“Because they guard their source code carefully, commercial
software vendors are seen in a less than positive light by many
open-source developers. But perennially badmouthed Microsoft
escaped the conference unscathed.”
““A lot of (open-source advocates) believe that generating
revenue by selling software shouldn’t be done,” he said after the
speech. “But SCO’s current revenue model demands that we license
our software. We’d go out of business if we flipped it
around.””
