Financial Times: Microsoft: China denies software ban

The Chinese Ministry of Information Industry on Friday
denied reports that it had banned Microsoft’s Windows 2000
operating system from government computers.

“The official Yangcheng Evening News reported on Wednesday that
government departments had been ordered to use
domestically-developed systems to avoid an over-reliance on
Microsoft products that could lead to security problems and virus
issues.”

“Zhang Qi, the head regulator of the software industry, said in
an official statement that no ban had been announced.”
