CD burners are popular toys, but a lot of people are put off by
some of the traditional command-line tools out there for them.
FirstLinux takes a quick look at the GTK+-based gcombust, which
rolls a lot of functionality into a single package, including
creation of ISO images, wav-to-CD, label generation, and burning
from the hard drive with no intermediate ISO creation for the
space-strapped.
Compared with Nero and Easy CD Creator (2 heavyweight
windows burners), gcombust is a small package that doesn’t aim to
be the kitchen sink of burning programs. However it achieves its
aim of providing an easy to use frontend to the powerful linux
console CD writing tools. It’s not ideal for creating audio CDs and
is a little slow in use although this is a development release.
Overall this is an extremely useful program for a Linux newcomer
who is unfamiliar with the complexities of console based
tools.
