Flash development in Ubuntu 10.04 with Eclipse and FDT

[ Thanks to Matthew Casperson for this

“Linux Flash developers have been largely neglected by the
bigger Flash/Flex IDEs like Flex and Flash Builder, Flash Develop
and Flash CS4/5. The technology behind some of these IDEs is cross
platform though: Eclipse is available on all major operating
systems, and the Flex compiler is written in Java. Still, while
Adobe releases Flash Builder 4 for Windows, Flex Builder 3 for
Linux is still languishing in an alpha state.

“FDT 3.5 is an add-on for Eclipse that offers much of the
functionality present in Flash Builder, and the good news is that
it works (to an extent) in Linux. Some features don’t work as you’d
expect, but for those that are adventurous, the following steps
show you how to get Eclipse and FDT working in Ubuntu 10.04.”
